Quick couplings and nipples EC - DN 7,2
Quick couplings and nipples DN 7,2 are standard pneumatic couplings for quick connection of hoses and compressed air equipment. They allow one-handed (quick) connection and disconnection of air lines in seconds, which significantly speeds up tool changes and handling of the lines. This is the most common type of quick coupling (called. Euro profile with a nominal clearance of 7.2 mm) is characterised by a high flow rate of around 1,100 l/min and minimal pressure drop. This makes it ideal for use in workshops, industry and service stations - the DN 7.2 quick coupling reliably connects compressor, hose and pneumatic tools safely and without the need for tools. The standardised profile ensures that all compatible DN 7.2 nipples and quick couplings from different manufacturers fit together.
Main advantages: quick one-handed connection, universal use for different applications (compressed air, water, inert gases, etc.), wide availability and compatibility across manufacturers within the same standard. The DN 7.2 quick couplings are available in various materials (durable nickel-plated brass, stainless steel, etc.) and designs (e.g. single-sided closable with valve in the coupling, double-sided closable with valve and in the nipple, free-flowing without valves for maximum flow or safety with safety release element). All of these options are designed for efficient and leak-free tight connections over the long term. Below you will find more detailed information, including specific application examples, the advantages and disadvantages of DN 7.2 quick couplers, maintenance tips and advice on choosing the right type.

Advantages of quick couplers DN 7,2
-
Quick and convenient to use: the design allows the line to be connected or disconnected very quickly - the nipple is simply inserted into the hose connector and a click creates a firm connection sealed with an o-ring. The disconnection is made by pushing in the clutch sleeve. This makes it easy to operate the circuit with one hand, effortlessly and without the need for tools or complicated operations. This feature saves time when frequently changing tools or reconnecting hoses in operation(see article [Quick couplings - connecting and disconnecting with one hand]).
-
Versatile and widely used: quick couplings DN 7.2 are one of the most widely used types of couplings for compressed air. They are designed primarily for pneumatic systems (compressors, air distribution, tools), but in the reversible design they can also be used for other media - typically water and low-pressure gases. These are full-flow couplings with a large cross-section, which can supply enough air even for high consumption equipment (e.g. professional pneumatic tools) without significant pressure restriction.
-
Standardization and compatibility: the DN 7.2 profile is based on the European standard (so-called. Euro quick coupler). All quick couplings and nipples in this category are interchangeable - components of different brands can be combined as long as they have the same DN 7.2 profile. This gives the user freedom of choice and easy replacement of parts. (On the other hand, couplings of different standards or other DNs are not compatible with each other - see the section on standards below.)
-
A wide range of variants: different designs are available for every need. Most commonly used are single-sided quick couplings (with a valve in the coupling that closes the air flow after disconnection and minimizes leakage). For special purposes, there are double-sided closing couplings (the valve is also in the nipple - when disconnected, both sides are closed, so there is no leakage) or, on the contrary, free-passing couplings without valves (they ensure maximum flow, but when disconnected, the medium escapes from both parts). There are also dripless couplings and safety quick couplings with release ring, which first relieve the pressure when disconnecting - these ensure even safer handling (preventing dangerous "whipping" of the hose by air pressure). This allows the user to choose the optimum type of coupling according to flow, tightness and safety requirements.
-
Quality materials: Most standard DN 7.2 quick couplers are made of brass (often with a nickel plating finish) or stainless steel. Brass quick couplings are affordable and suitable for common use in workshops and craft operations. The nickel-plated brass then better resists wear and corrosion, thus extending the life of the clutch. Stainless steel quick couplings are the most durable - they can withstand harsh industrial applications, aggressive environments and frequent connection/disconnection cycles without significant wear. The stainless steel design guarantees a very long service life and virtually eliminates air leaks due to wear and tear. For special applications (pharmaceutical, medical, food industry), stainless steel is also hygienically safe.
Disadvantages and limitations
-
Gradual wear and leakage: the disadvantage of quick couplers (especially the cheaper brass ones) is the wear of moving parts and seals during use. The softer brass can become dented over time and the o-rings will wear, resulting in reduced flow and minor leaks. Typical leakage of compressed air through a worn quick coupling can be up to ~1 Nm3/hr (approx. 16 l/min) at 7 bar. This represents only about 1-2% of the total flow, but from an economic point of view such a permanent leak can mean a loss of several thousand crowns per year in energy for the compressor. It is therefore advisable to replace worn clutches in time or invest in better quality clutches (e.g. stainless steel) that will maintain their tightness for longer.
-
The right combination is necessary: each quick coupling only works with the corresponding profile nipple. The lack of interchangeability between different standards can be considered a limitation - for example, the Euro profile DN 7.2 cannot be directly connected to the British profile DN 5 or other types. The user must therefore ensure that all couplers used in the system are of the same type. (This is not a problem within a single workshop, where a single standard is usually used, but can occur when combining devices from different regions.) Fortunately, DN 7.2 is a European standard, so it is a universal choice in the domestic context and compatibility within this standard is guaranteed. The connection of different systems can be solved by using adapters or by changing the terminals.
-
Flow restriction for larger applications: the nominal diameter of 7.2 mm provides sufficient flow for most common pneumatic applications. However, in very high-flow systems (e.g. central distribution systems for dozens of machines or special machines with extreme air consumption), this profile can represent a bottleneck. In such cases, it is worthwhile to reach for quick couplings with larger clearances, such as DN 7.8, DN 10 or larger high-flow couplings DN 19, which can deliver even higher air volumes. However, for the vast majority of workshop and industrial applications, DN 7.2 is the optimal combination of size and flow rate.
-
Safety when disconnecting: classic (non-security) quick couplings immediately release the pressure from the hose when disconnected, which can cause the hose to whip violently and cause a noisy air leak. This is potentially dangerous for the operator, especially with longer hoses. This shortcoming is solved by safety quick couplings with gradual depressurization - when disconnected, they first release the pressure and then release the nipple. The disadvantage of standard quick couplers DN 7,2 can therefore be lower safety if they are not used in a safety version. The solution is either to follow a careful procedure (first manually depressurize the branch) or to use a safety type quick coupler (e.g. Prevost), which eliminates the risk(see [safety quick couplers]).
-
Higher price for quality variants: high-end quick couplings (e.g. stainless steel or with safety valve) have a higher purchase price compared to basic brass types. From an economic point of view, this can be a disadvantage if you need to install dozens of connections. On the other hand, the investment pays for itself in the form of longer service life, savings in air leakage and improved operational safety. It is therefore necessary to consider the price/performance ratio when selecting a specific quick coupling variant.
Practical use
Quick couplings DN 7,2 are universal pneumatic couplings widely used across various fields. Some examples of typical usage:
-
Workshops and garages: wherever compressors and pneumatic tools are used, quick couplings are indispensable. In car repair shops and tire shops, it is used to quickly connect tire inflators, impact wrenches, blow guns or other workshop tools to the hose. In paint shops and joinery workshops, they enable the operative replacement of spray guns, grinding tools and other compressed air-powered equipment.
-
Industrial plants: in industry (production lines, assembly) pneumatic distribution systems are used with a number of tapping points equipped with quick couplings for connecting machines and tools. Here, DN 7.2 quick couplings ensure reliable connection of hoses to cylinders, manipulators, robotic elements and other pneumatic systems. Thanks to the possibility of double-sided closure, they are also used for liquid connection (e.g. in mould cooling, leak testing, etc.).
-
Pneumatic tools and machines: virtually any portable compressed air equipment - drills, hammers, spray guns, nailers, etc. - uses quick couplings for easy connection to the hose. DN 7.2 is standard for most commercially available pneumatic tools, so that, for example, changing tools (disconnecting one and connecting the other) takes only a few seconds. This greatly increases the efficiency of work in garages, construction sites and hobby workshops.
-
Specific applications: in the medical, chemical and food industries, stainless steel quick couplings DN 7,2 are used for connecting various instruments and media distribution lines (compressed air, oxygen, CO₂, water, etc.). The stainless steel quick couplings meet the requirements for cleanliness and enable quick operation of technological equipment (e.g. connection of sterilization units, beverage lines, laboratory apparatus). In the agriculture and construction industries, we find robust brass compressed air quick couplings on mobile compressors and pneumatic machines, where they help to reduce set-up and move times.
Quick coupler compatibility and standards
The quick coupling and the nipple must have the same profile (DN) to be connected. Within the European DN 7.2 profile, all products are compatible across manufacturers - so you can combine, for example, a Prevost coupling and a Lüdecke nipple, etc., the connection will work. However, if you try to combine two different standards (e.g. European DN 7.2 nipple and British DN 5 coupling), you will not succeed - the physical dimensions and locking mechanism are different. It is therefore important to always choose the right type when expanding your equipment. There are several main standards of quick couplings on the market: in addition to the European (DN 7.2), there is for example the Italian/international variant (often referred to as DN 7.4 or DN 7.8), the British profile (DN 5, referred to as Rectus 17 or ORION), the American profile (ARO, Milton, etc.), or special high-flow and industrial couplings with larger clearances. These systems are not interconnected, but can be interchanged by changing nipples or using adapters.
For users in the Czech Republic, the DN 7.2 quick coupling is the safest choice - it is the standard you will find on commercial compressors, in pneumatic tools and in industry. Our e-shop offers a complete assortment for this profile (including various thread reducers, splitters, etc.), so you can easily assemble the entire system. If you are interested in the detailed differences between the different DN sizes of quick couplers and their interchangeability, we recommend to refer to [related article in the advisory] focused on the compatibility of different types. Maintenance and care of quick couplings
For long-term reliable operation of the DN 7.2 quick couplers, it is advisable to pay attention to basic maintenance and follow a few principles:
-
Cleanliness of couplings: Keep the internal mechanism of the quick coupler clean. When disconnecting, try to prevent dirt and dust from entering the coupling and nipple. Contamination (e.g. metal filings, dust) can cause faster wear of valves and seals. If the coupling falls to the ground into the dirt, clean it with compressed air or wipe it clean before using it again.
-
Regular seal check: the main sealing element is the o-ring inside the clutch. It may harden or crack over time. Check the condition of the seal - if you notice a persistent air leak at the connection point, the o-ring is probably damaged. Replacing the gasket is usually simple and inexpensive, and will significantly extend the life of the quick coupler. Replacement o-rings are available depending on the type of clutch.
-
Lubrication and corrosion protection: the moving parts of the quick coupling (sleeve, balls) appreciate occasional lubrication. Use a drop of a suitable oil or lubricant for the tyre (e.g. silicone oil) to ensure smooth running and corrosion protection. Be careful not to overdo the oil in the distributors in applications where oil could contaminate the media (in this case, use oil-free lubricants). For outdoor operation or moist air from the compressor, corrosion is a risk with common brass, so consider nickel-plated or stainless steel couplings, which are more resistant to corrosion(see [maintenance advice for quick couplings]).
-
Proper handling: quick couplings are not designed to carry bending or tensile stresses. Make sure that the hose connected via the coupling is not excessively stretched or kinked - when moving the hose, use swivel couplings or joints or additional holders to avoid excessive strain. Also, always disconnect by squeezing the sleeve (never by pulling the nipple out by force). Careful handling will significantly increase the life of the entire connection system.
Following these principles will ensure that your pneumatic quick couplings DN 7.2 will work reliably, safely and with maximum efficiency for a long time. If you are not sure which type of quick coupler or material to choose for your application, please read our detailed [quick coupler selection guide] or contact our technical support. A properly selected and maintained quick coupling saves you not only the trouble of leaks and breakdowns, but also the cost of running the compressor and the frequent replacement of worn parts. With the DN 7.2 quick couplings from our range, you get a proven solution for all common and demanding compressed air applications.
